In 1989, Stephanie was caught in the Loma Prieta Earthquake in Santa Cruz County, California. She had been Vice President/Controller for the family’s Scotts Valley business for twenty-two years. Her office building nearly collapsed, trapping her inside, until she could struggle her way out through a jammed and blocked door. During that struggle that she thought to herself, “If I ever get out of here alive, I am never coming back to this office again!” She knew she would devote herself to art. Fifteen years later, she is a professional artist, happily working in her custom studio, at her home in the Santa Cruz mountains. She can be seen driving her 1965 Aquamarine, VWArt Bus all over Santa Cruz County.She says, “Pastels offer me a wonderful medium, in which to create color, form, atmosphere, mood and style. For me, creating a pastel painting presents the opportunity to express the romance and warmth of creature relationships, to each other, and their surroundings. My style is a combination of representational expressionism with interpretive color enhancements. Expressionistic portraits in pastels are my most passionate, and favorite, use of the medium. I custom design a frame to go with each pastel painting. This is a delightful part of the process, and I love the result of the integration and expression.”
Stephanie studied Art at UCSC, Stanford, Academia Italiana- Florence, La Romita School of Art- Terni Italy, in Aix en Provence, France, and in Guanajuato, Mexico. She has also taught Art in Paris, France; and has been the Juror for several exhibits in California. She is very active in the local arts community, serving as President of the Santa Cruz Art League, for 3 years, and is currently on the Board of Directors for the (Salz) Tannery Artspace Project.
Stephanie is adept at oil painting, pastels, photography, ceramics, frame-design, and engraving. She excels at depicting still life and landscapes, in addition to her well-known figurative portrayal.
